Read on to learn more about this procedure and how to know if you need it.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

3D illustration of inside of tooth and root canals When a tooth becomes too decayed or infected for a regular dental filling, root canal therapy can successfully eliminate the damaged tissue to restore your health. Typically, this procedure is straightforward, starting with the removal of the dental pulp – the interior portion of your tooth. Once all the infected or damaged tissue is removed, and the area is disinfected, Dr. Morgan will fill the affected tooth with a biocompatible material called gutta percha. This material strengthens your tooth so it isn’t weak in the future. Next, your tooth is protected and preserved with a dental restoration like a filling or crown. For a dental crown, you will usually need to schedule a separate appointment to receive your permanent restoration.

How Do You Know if You Need a Root Canal?

After thoroughly examining the affected area, Dr. Morgan will be able to create a personalized treatment plan that includes the service he recommends. Typically, it’s easy to know when you may need a root canal because you’ll experience symptoms like pain, extreme sensitivity, and difficulty chewing. You may also notice a pimple-like abscess near the tooth, which is usually a warning sign of an infection. However, you may not even realize that you need a root canal, making your routine checkups incredibly important. Dr. Morgan pays close attention to the health of your teeth, using all-digital X-rays and intraoral cameras to detect any symptoms.
